Description

This is a necklace and earring set of very unusual hand-crafted glass “sand” beads from Africa. The organic looking beads are reddish-colored and have a rough, bumpy texture. The strand measures 18” including the silver cross (1.5” x2”). The beads on the graduated strand vary in size from approximately 5mm x10mm to 10mm x 20mm. The matching earrings are 2.5” long. I purchased the set from “Buffalo Gal Designs” in the 1980’s. The original necklace tag is included (see photo) and states “Very old African sand beads, silver beads and cones, silver Southwestern cross.” I researched the beads and found that they are considered rare, originated in West Africa and are fashioned to imitate Nigerian organic coral. The beads used to be common 50 years ago in the African trade market but are now very rare. The beads are believed to be approximately 75-100 years old.
